Inclusion and belonging are the themes of this title. The colorful and vivid images in this picture book will delight young readers. The message reminds us that even though we are all different, our differences make us special.  The story includes a variety of characters, and it highlights each child’s uniqueness. Inspired by Sofia Sanchez, a young girl with Down Syndrome, who has risen above personal challenges to show the world her value. This title is a great choice for helping students develop empathy for others and love for themselves.  

About the Authors:

Margaret O’Hair has authored several books for young readers. She is a wife, mom, dog-lover, and kindergarten teacher.  She collaborated with Sofia Sanchez on this title to inspire children to love themselves. In addition, she wrote Be YouTiful, Love Sofia (2017). It features Sofia’s story and includes professional photos of her life. Sofia Sanchez was abandoned at birth and lived her first 14 months in an orphanage in Ukraine before being adopted by her forever parents from the United States. Upon arrival at her new home, she was surrounded by love from her adopted family, and she began to thrive. About the Illustrator:

Sofia Cardoso creates a happy tone in her images.  She uses a bright color palette with lots of soft lines to create joyful scenes.  She uses a mix of traditional and digital mediums. She has been drawing and creating since childhood. She credits her family and her teachers from kindergarten and beyond who always encouraged her art. She resides in her native Portugal.
