I love cookbooks for kids. This one is VEGAN, so I grabbed it since my library does not have a lot of vegan cookbooks for kids. The author, Ruby Roth, has written four cookbooks for kids, all vegan, so if you can’t find this one, you might consider another of hers.
There were a number of things that I liked about this cookbook. She uses a round symbol with “Adult Alert” so kids will know that they may need adult help with a particular step. She gives nutrient information about many of the ingredients and tells how they help our bodies. For example, this quote is on the page for Red Balloon Tea. “A dried goji berry is tiny, but if you measured its nutrients, it would be the size of the moon (Okay, maybe not that big, but BIG). Each bright red berry is JAM-PACKED with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants (cell protectors), and phytochemicals (plant nutrients), making gojis one of the MOST NUTRITIOUS foods of the plants.”
This kind of information is all through the book. I included a sample of a double page spread recipe above. All the recipes are double-paged. The cookbook is entertaining, and the photos of the recipes are enticing for children and even adults.
I hope you have cookbooks for children in your library, but if you don’t, this is a good place to start.
